This isn’t your everyday repair but it will be a great example if your wondering about the viability of refurbishment over replacement. I would estimate a repair like this to be close to three quarters of the price of replacement, it isn’t necessarily good value for money, however we had no choice as the council wanted to save them if at all possible, and of course anything can be saved and it is unlikely that you will need 70% total surface area rebuilt. I might also add that the client was extremely happy with the outcome.
Below is the repairs far more advanced and nearly ready to fit back. Just the little glazing bar for the corner coloured glass, and then the small clear reglaze to go. A panel then needed fitting and there we have a door we can safely say will last another twenty years if decorated, and maintained well.
This was more difficult to repair than replacing, however the client wanted the French Doors kept original as much as possible. We needed to make the door structurally sound, and that meant full mortice and tenon rebuild to the lower section as there really wasn’t a great deal of original door, we replaced the left hand side mullion and that was enough to provide structural integrity right back up the door with quality joining techniques. We repaired the door in softwood because the original door was this material, and repairing in hardwood would leave more opportunity for the timbers to split, since both will move at different temperatures and light exposure.
